Calorie labelling on your Just Eat menu

Calorie labelling on menus is to be introduced in cafes, restaurants and takeaways in England from 6 April 2022. It comes as part of the Government’s drive to tackle obesity and improve the nation’s health.

Large businesses will be required to display calorie information on menus and food labels from April 2022

The new rules will help the public to make healthier choices when ordering a takeaway or eating out

Businesses with 250 or more employees (including franchisee employees) in England, including cafes, restaurants and takeaways, will be required to display the calorie information of non-prepacked food and soft drink items that are prepared for customers. If you are in scope and haven’t already, please contact your Account Manager to provide this detail as soon as possible.

If this affects you, your menu will need updating with:
1. The energy content of the food in kilocalories (kcal)
2. Reference to the size of portion to which the calorie information relates

The information must be available at the point at which the consumer chooses what food to buy. This point of choice can be from a menu e.g. on a display board, or on a website or app like Just Eat. These regulations apply to food businesses trading in England only, but are likely to be rolled out across the UK in the future.

  • The energy content must be provided in kilocalories using the letters 'kcal' and should also refer to the portion size e.g. chocolate brownie 700 kcal (2 servings).
The statement ‘Adults need around 2000 kcal a day’ must also be clearly displayed for consumers.
  • The calorie information must be as accurate as possible. (+/- 20% tolerance is permitted to take account of such things as ingredient substitutions.)
  • Certain foods and menus items are exempt from the regulation e.g. foods on a menu for less than 30 consecutive days, which takes into account specials and seasonal dishes.
  • Calorie information must be easily visible, legible and not hidden or obscured in any way.
  • The regulations apply to food that is intended for immediate consumption either on or off-premises. This includes foods that are pre-packed for direct sale.

You'll soon be able to add calorie information to your menu. Keep an eye out for more information in the coming weeks.
