Modern Slavery is a crime and a violation of fundamental human rights. It takes various forms, such as slavery, servitude, forced and compulsory labour, and human trafficking. We all have a responsibility to look out for the signs of Modern Slavery.

How do I spot a victim of Modern Slavery?

Victims of Modern Slavery can be any colour, any gender, any ethnicity or nationality. They can also have different levels of education.

Here are some telltale signs to look out for:

Appearance

• Do they look underfed or malnourished in appearance?
• Are they wearing inappropriate clothing for their job?
• Do they have poor levels of hygiene?
• Are there bruises or other signs that they are ill-treated? (e.g. serious and untreated injuries that they are unwilling to explain or are inconsistent in explaining.)

Behaviour and fear of authorities or third parties

• Are they kept away from visitors or prevented from speaking to people?
• Do they appear withdrawn or frightened?
• Do they seem not to know the local area?

Identity documents and bank accounts

• Do they have access to their own passports and other forms of ID?
• Do they have control over their bank accounts?

Surroundings

• Are there any sleeping bags or other evidence of people sleeping in offices, food storage or preparation areas?
• Are there bars on the windows and doors, or locks on the outside of doors, or permanently covered windows?
• Is the property in a poor condition? There may be signs of overcrowding and poor sanitation.
